as i walked down georgetown pike
past the ritzy neighborhoods
down to the 7-11
boots wet from the snow
to get a pack of camel lights
i looked back at my footprints
and realized i could see them
for miles
the crunch crunch crunches from the past few hours
slowly filled in again by the falling flakes
a smile from the gas station attendant
as i walked through the paneled doors
greeted by the neon sale signs
informing me
that milk was $1 off per gallon
a smile from the brunette by the ford suv
tucking her kids into their car seats
before they drove off
to who knows where
a smile from the old man
parked at the side of the road in his old buick
as i made my way back to the house
i asked him if he needed help
and he said no, he was just
watching the snow fall
so since i knew nobody was home
i stayed with him
for a minute or two
and watched.
it was not until i caught
my own reflection
in his rear view window as i set back out
that i realized i was smiling too

But I’ve got to keep going

can’t stop for a new pair

The sweat on my back leaves me with a sticky musky kind of feeling

I look out over the desert then down at my feet

I wiggle my toes watching them through a gap in my boot

Tuscon is about 17 miles behind me

San Pedro 26 miles forward

I don’t want to go back

I take another step wincing at the pain

I set my sight on a pillar of stone shaped like shoe

wish I could laugh

I see the snake about two feet in front of me

I politely go around

a loose rock and I fall to the ground

I feel a sting and look just in time to see

a brown scorpion run from my boot

the pain envelops me and my leg goes numb

on my back the sun beats down on me

I spy the shoe shaped rock

The store was too cold,
Full of all things odd and old.
But, she widened her eyes,
As she laid them on her prize,
Behind a mountain of mold.
Their bright color caught her eye,
It put her in a state of high.
She grabbed the pink rubber boots,
That lay next to the red suits.
“Now my feet’ll stay dry!”
