overpowering that new-car smell

A little bead of sweat rolls down my cheek
and falls to the ground
Right there in the middle of the cucumbers
I look up at the sun beating down
cant believe it’s this hot
in the middle of November
I pull off my gardening gloves
and look at the neat rows
feels weird to be planting
in the middle of winter
I stand up
and feel my back pop
Stretching I feel my muscles groan
from a long day’s work
Still, there are mouths to feed
and we all pull our share
I watch the young ones
running water down the rows
Funny, I never thought I would be a mother
but somehow the lost ones always find me
I never turned one away even when it meant
we all had to tighten our belts
Luckily some of the grown ones find their way too
or we would never survive
Fondly I remember the taste of soda pop
and the feel of cool air conditioning
on a hot summer day
In many ways we are better now
It’s peaceful here
and lonely

The store isn’t busy.
Still,
I can’t get to where I want to be.
The discount bins,
From the middle of the wide aisle,
Stand in my way.
Crowding the path,
As if I were shopping,
With hundreds of faceless people.
Connecting the faceless bins,
With unmoving shopping carts,
Overflowing with five dollar DVDs,
Dirty yellow tape

The cucumber melon lotion,
Again.”
