it’s the first time that they
have been so dressed up at the same time
save maybe a wedding or two
(tuxes never were their thing)
in years past
they’d preferred faded carhartts
and scuffed up red wing boots

but today is different
today there will be no fishing
no hiking or hunting
by the river
just a river
of tears
as the coffin slowly shuts on
those green eyes

When I was born in a cage, I didn’t mind.
I didn’t know anything else, and it was nice.
There was a big picture window, and I could see the Sun.
The cage was small, but I was small too, and I had no reason to spread my wings.

You were a gentle keeper.
I always had enough to eat, enough to drink, an appreciative audience for my song.
I was safe from the outside world, with only you to care about
Until you opened the door.

You thought it might be nice to let me see if I could fly.
I was afraid at first. Instinct told me I could, but did I really dare to try?
I stretched my wings, and you stroked my feathers.
You made me feel like I could do anything.

And then, you saw that I was really going to do it.
My muscles flexed; your eyes got wide.
You put me back inside and closed the door.
You thought you were still being kind.

I live in a cage, and I hate it.
I remember the wind in my feathers; it was so nice.
I felt the Sun, warm on my face, and now it’s just a view.
This cage is too small. I can’t stretch my wings.

The blaze began only minutes ago, but it had already engulfed most of the two story house.
Orange flame danced wildly with the green all weather siding.
Licking it’s bright, flashing tongue against the old house.
Neighbors began to flood out into the cold from their heated homes.
Watching the blazing carnage, everyone were fascinated.
Screaming, a tall, balding man came flooding out of the green heavy duty prefabricated door.
He turned in circles for a full minute.
Turning, spinning, again and again.
Searching, looking, spinning, turning.
Again and again.
Over and over.
Turning and spinning
Spinning and turning.
He stopped, finally, not finding what he made himself dizzy over.
The neighbors, now in a near full state of shock, watched the man blaze back into the fiery house.
He pulled two young children out of the house moments later.
Both girls, ashes covering their faces, their clothes singed and smoldering.
Next came the lights and the sirens, and the orders.
The fire decided to fight back, engulfing the now empty house next door.
This caused people on the street start to panic.
They began to move like wildfire.
Blazing in through their own heavy duty prefabricated doors, gathering personal items.
Photo albums, jewelry, baggies filled with other miscellaneous items.
More orders, more flame, more water, more smoke.
The children were dead.
The children that often played in the front yard.
The children that covered the sidewalks with colorful art in the summer.
Now their father, the man, was dead too.
The man who may have screamed at his children a little too much.
The man who created a meth lab in his attic while his children were at school.
To the young girl, who lived across the street, it meant only one thing.
She would need to find another prefabricated door to visit twice a week for her fix.

http://poetryassignment.com/2008/12/assignment-door/

(Another one I’m not happy with. But inspired by a raging fire down a few blocks from me last night. A man and his two children died when the meth lab he built caused the house to catch on fire, along with the one next door.)

He asked her for help deciding
what color to paint his front door

She looked at him in silence, pondering -

Does she take her stand now, leaving him
to choose without her, showing him
she’s the strong one? Or does she pick -
making him think her name every day,
each time he sees a splash of color
out of the corner of his brown eyes?

In the silence they stared deeply
each knowing what was at stake
what had been lost and what
could be found again

She thought of someone else
who must surely have the key
to his door – their door – by now

“Paint it red.”

A gentle knock on
The bedroom door
“Sasha, are you OK?”
“Go away! I hate you!”
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry”
Would never heal
No matter how long
Carrie looked at
The door but saw
Before her a wall
Built from the
Broken fragments
Of love and trust
An immutable fact
Impassible
Un-door
A Wall
A New wall where
No wall had been
Baring her from
Her Sasha.
Carrie knew with the
Absolute certainty
Of the sunrise that
She could not breach
This new wall. There
Would be no tomorrow
For her and Sasha.
Time
Would not wear down
This wall.
This wall was forever.
Sasha,
Beloved Sasha was
Lost to her.
Carrie’s palm brushed
The oaken wall where
Once a door had been,
She turned and walked
Quietly away.
