I was excited
When I got the phone call from
Don. I have a job!

And now, I also
Have an excuse for being
lax in writing poems.

A month ago it was
“I have to babysit.”
“I’m just too tired.”
Came after that.

How I wish that were all.

“I don’t have any money.”
“My mom needs a ride to work.”
Would all be better than
What you say to me now.

I’d rather take the lies.

Because now, your excuses are
“Andrew won’t let me.”
“He gets mad when I go out with my friends.”
“He’s just a jealous person.”

And as much as you know
He’s mentally abusive, not jealous.
And as much as you know
You’d be better off without him.

You and I know you’ll never leave him.
Because you really believe that
Having a truthful excuse is better
Than lying to all of your friends.

Flat as a pancake
A house crushed
By the brutal hand
Of God and Man.

Seeping from the layers
A meaty red jam with
Hands and arms and eyes
A dead boy, just 15.

Nobody stops to stare
Nobody stops to care
Another dead child among
So many. So many.

The sound of shells flying
Overhead as the onslaught
Explodes, more flat houses
More pancakes and much
More meaty red jam.

The tanks rolled in
The troops marched in
The sanity marched out
Compassion marched out

Nothing left but the lunacy
Of the zealots and the
Crazy-brave violence of
Dispassionate dissolution.

Ancient feuds fought
with modern weapons
Without excuse or
Explanation ensues.
