He would sit at the piano in her living room for hours on end. Tinkering with old compositions, sometimes creating new ones. Now that he was gone, she missed the endless stream of notes he strung together. She still didn’t understand why he left. But she still remembered the night he did- she sat next to him as he played a new song, she couldn’t help but put words to it. Two voices, hers and the piano’s, singing out together in perfect harmony. She sat at the grand piano alone now, wishing that she could remember the tune to their song.

drops bombarding small puddles
music of the rain
giant thunder claps
resounding like timpani
more percussion now
in trees crickets chirp
rubbing wings like violins
nature’s string section
howling of the wind

woodwinds in the clouds
bullfrogs grunting now
throaty, brassy echoings
season’s overture

above foreheads glistening from beads of sweat
contorted limbs and neon glowsticks
flashing lcd lights and billowing fake fog
the dj perches on his roost like an electronic bird
metallic aural landscapes pumping from
the massive speakers surrounding us all
like an army trying to outflank the enemy
the thumping beat picks up
120 beats per minute now
bass is pumping pumping thumping thumping
he looks out, scans the dancefloor
reading the dancing mob like a living book
the air is heavy,
thick with smoke and sixteenth notes
but despite the beat it feels like
we move in slow motion
the dj connecting us track by track
i do not feel my own heartbeat
it is communal, shared
the faster dj turns the tables
that much faster our blood will flow
the hours pass, wilt of the clock
like a dying flower
that no one pays attention to
their eyes of no real use here
their ears perceptive only to
the almighty dj
giving his orders
til 4 in the morning
feel and hear the only senses
except for when
a nearby friend
rubs against our bare arms or back
transferring energy with their touch
